Thomas McClary is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as the lead guitarist and co-founder of the funk and soul band The Commodores. He has also released several solo albums and has acted in films. McClary was born in Eustis, Florida, and grew up in Apopka, Florida. He began playing guitar at the age of nine and was influenced by blues, jazz, and gospel music. He attended Apopka High School and was a member of the school's marching band. McClary co-founded The Commodores in 1968 with Lionel Richie, Milan Williams, Ronald LaPread, and William King. The band released their debut album Machine Gun in 1974 and went on to become one of the most successful funk and soul bands of the 1970s and 1980s. McClary wrote and co-wrote several of the band's hits, including "Brick House" and "Easy". McClary left The Commodores in 1984 to pursue a solo career. He released his debut solo album, Thomas McClary, in 1985. He has since released several more solo albums, including The Journey (1987), The Journey Continues (1989), and The Journey Continues Again (1991). McClary has also acted in several films, including The Color Purple (1985), The Five Heartbeats (1991), and The Preacher's Wife (1996).
